More gardens for charity welcomed

To the editor:

Hardly a weekend goes by when I don't see some organization encouraging motorists to donate money at a car wash. While all charity work is good, can't they figure out something else to do instead of waving arms and wasting water? Why not put the water on a garden and grow a big, fat, juicy tomato? It's a great way to enjoy the summer, get a little workout, learn a thing or two and get immense satisfaction.

Cape Girardeau currently has four farmers markets. (The Missourian failed to mention the Scholarship Garden market in a recent article.) Three are for profit, and one is for charity.

Imagine the parking lot in front of Hutson's Fine Furniture filled with vendors offering herbs, vegetables and cut flowers -- all for good causes.

As steward of the Downtown Merchants Association Scholarship Garden, I am please to report we have raised approximately $3,500 for our scholarship over the past four years. And the summer isn't over yet. We are at the Boardman pavilion from 3 to 5 p.m. every Saturday.

If your church, service organization, fraternity, sorority or social club would consider joining us, please contact me. Make some money for your good cause, and make someone happy by providing a nutritious treat. For more information, call me at 335-9149.
