Police not reporting details of I-55 accident

Tuesday, July 29, 2008

Police haven't yet released details on a car accident reported shortly after 4 p.m. on Interestate 55 in the area of the Kingshighway exit.

We have no details to report at this time, other than the approximate time of the accident and the presence of injuries at the scene which were reported over police radio.

Look for updates later on seMissourian.com.

Just a bit of perspective here - I passed by the accident at around 4:45pm - still a lot of activity - car in the median, traffic backed up, emergency personnel all around, etc. - IMO, still a work-in-progress.

In a profession where accuracy is critical and initial off-the-cuff comments too often can come back to haunt - suggest it was not a matter of 'not reporting details' - which implies a cloaking or withholding of information, but rather a "can't yet report details" - better suggesting that various pieces of information were still being acquired, analyzed, and verified.

At the time this article was originally posted (5:18pm), suggest that witness statements were still being taken and compared against each other for validity, as well as a survey of the accident site by the officers - not to mention keeping the area as safe and secure as possible for the growing numbers of impatient motorists wishing to get on by.

Any preliminary statements made to the media without some sort of validation process to back the statements up would represent little more than one's opinion and present potentially unrecoverable biases in the investigation.

I agree here...the real news is that an accident happened. Was a journalist on the scene? Was there a backup? What agencies are investigating? If no journalist was available to make some observations, then why try to slant the article in a way that police are cloaking. Now, if there is any relevance to the secrecy, will the SEmissourian investigate that? If there is any relevance, I take back what I said, but then I hope the semissourian sticks with it and follows through.
