Scott City yard sale registration deadline is July 31

The Scott City Chamber of Commerce is urging people who have not yet registered for the annual Citywide Yard Sale to do so by July 31.

In its fifth year, the sale allows Scott City's residents, as well as those who live outside the city limits, to sale everything from antique furniture to clothing.

Sponsored by the Chamber, the sale is scheduled for Aug. 29 and 30.

All people who register by the end of July will have their yard sale's address listed in a booklet that will be available to the public. Advertisements for local businesses and a pull-out map of the city will be included in the booklet.

With the bleak economic situation, event organizer Chaundra Mason expects a larger turnout of bargain hunters than in 2007.

"Most people are hunting around for the best deal because of the economy," Mason said. "I believe we'll see an increased number of people who show up this year to find that perfect item for a great price."

Mason expects 60 people to register their yard sales by the deadline. To date, 40 have registered.

While there is no cost for Scott City residents to participate in the yard sale, those who live outside the community will be allowed to sell their items for a $20 fee at the caboose parking lot on Main Street, across from the VFW hall.

The yard sale began after Mason attended the 100-Mile Yard Sale along Highway 25 in Advance, Mo. She noticed the financial effect the event had on the area and believed the same could happen in Scott City.

"The economic benefits are huge each year for all the towns that participate in the 100-Mile Yard Sale, and I knew that Scott City could get a small taste of that with our event," Mason said. "So far, our area businesses have benefited from the event."
