Sikeston man allegedly assaults wife, tries to commit murder-suicide by driving into utility pole

Rodger Tillman
SIKESTON, Mo. — A 51-year-old Sikeston man was arrested after allegedly striking his wife in the head with a wooden ax handle at their home Tuesday afternoon, Scott County Sheriff Rick Walter said Thursday in a news release.

Rodger D. Tillman has been charged with two counts of domestic assault in the first degree, and counts of armed criminal action, bond has been set at $25,000 cash.

Tillman was arrested at the Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston after taking his wife there for medical attention.

Tillman and his wife of 30 years were at their residence north of Sikeston Tuesday afternoon when Tillman became upset and struck his wife in the head numerous times with a wooden ax handle, Walter said. Tillman then proceeded to drive his wife to the hospital for medical attention. On the way to the hospital, Tillman intentionally struck a utility pole at a high rate of speed reportedly attempting to kill his wife and himself. When Tillman struck the pole, it sheered the pole off and left the vehicle drivable, so Tillman continued to the hospital. Tillman received no injuries as a result of the incident involving the utility pole, and his wife received only minor injuries.

Walter said Tillman told investigators that he and his wife were suffering from financial burden and had recently been evicted from their residence. Tillman said he and his wife had discussed the matter and come to the conclusion that suicide was their only option. Tillman said when he struck his wife in the head with the ax handle and only injured her, that he decided he would drive in to the utility pole and kill them both.

I said a prayer for Mr. and Mrs.Tillman. Unfortunately there will probably be more cases like this one with the rising cost of fuel, food, etc. rising sharply and quickly.

As for the people with the negative posts on this article, be careful of the words you speak (in this case, type) because you may be only a step away from poverty yourself.

I do not live in the area, but I do hope that local ministers will go to these people and remind them of God's words and pray with them and help to provide some type of relief or guidance for them. I think the social classes are no longer poor, middle or rich...I believe the classes now are poor, working poor, very wealthy...which class are you in?

I am not sure how this couple got into the financial situation they are in, nor is it my business but I do pray that God provide them with the strength to endure their trials and guide them into a healthy financial situation.

And we say a prayer for you, "always helping", if you believe that **** and bull story for an instant. They agreed to a suicide pact so he hits her with an axe handle?? Last I heard, suicide is generally self-inflicted.

Well, he had the hard part. Have you ever tried to hit yourself in the head with an axe handle?

Clobber a utility pole then you and the vehicle are in good enough shape to head to the hospital? I wanna know what he was driving.

I know Roger and worked with him at one time. From the way I understand, there's more to it than what there is stated. Its obviously not my place to say it, so I will stop there, but Roger obviously has some issues to deal with. I find it hard to buy the "suicide pact" deal as well. It all doesn't make much sense to me either.

Does anyone believe that story? If I ever sign a suicide pack with my husband, I think I'll opt for an overdose, not an ax handle to the head.

Tito_Santana

Yeah I have to also say WTF? But I have to disagree with you on the train or truck. Good thing no one else got hurt but then again with this guys luck who knows.

He may have tried to do himself in with the ole car in the garage but probably forgot to close the door.

Though I hate to say this, this guy will probably make it on Paul Harvey. A few years ago some idiot took a taxi in Cape to rob a store and asked the driver to stay put while he gets a few things. Heard that one on Paul Harvey.

This is one I will have to share with some family and friends.

Talk about a bad day!

I feel sorry for them both. Just sounds like they hit rock bottom and didn't see any other way out. Very sad!

He looks like a nice guy. Talk about a wolf in sheep's clothing. LOL

Alwayshelping, your post made complete sense, thanks for sharing. What have we become as a nation??

This man deserves a Darwin Award.

-- Posted by BABE on Thu, Jul 10, 2008, at 10:34 PM

Babe thanks for helping me remember what that award was. Earlier I tried to remember it and forgot what it was called. But I don't think he would be on the list since he is still alive. In order to be a candidate you have to succeed in being killed or killing yourself in a stupid manner. But hey there is always tomorrow.

Spoke to my sister in St. Louis this evening and it is already making the news up there.

Why the handle? The axe head would have been more efficient. Messy, but efficient.

Alwayshelping......It’s good to know people like you exist. I sometimes forget to empathize with others, and blame them for their unfortunate circumstances. Help remind me and post more often.

What a dipsh*t. He can't even committ himself to a course of action.

It's sad that: (1) they were in such a crappy position; &

(2) he was too stupid to use a gun; &

(3) now, as a result of being stupid, he's in a much worse position; &

(4) his battered wife still won't have a home (but he will, haha).

Assuming they ever made that agreement in the first place...c'mon...if I thought suicide was the only way out, I wouldn't have my husband hit me over the head! I think we would choose a much less painful route. My feeling is that he hit her, then came up with the story! I wonder if her account backs it up...

How can you get beat over the head with an axe handle several times and only receive "minor" injuries?

Sounds like this guy needs to work on his swing.
