Meals With Friends

The financial squeeze at the end of the month is familiar to many people. For some, scraping up enough money to purchase groceries after all the other expenses have been met is a real hardship. For years, the Salvation Army in Cape Girardeau has made sure people who must choose between food and other expenses on a limited income have a place to eat a hot meal. For many of the participants, the "Meals With Friends" on the last five nights of each month are also a time for socialization.

The Salvation Army puts no restrictions or judgments on those who show up for the free meals. And those who eat at 701 Good Hope St. appreciate both the food and the warmth of the welcome they receive.

The "Meals With Friends" also is an opportunity for churches and other organizations to get involved with the Salvation Army's efforts to make sure no one has to go hungry. These groups provide volunteers who help prepare the food, serve it and clean up afterward.

In addition, many restaurants and grocery stores donate food items for the monthly meals, which helps the Salvation Army stretch its resources.

The Salvation Army, the groups that volunteer and the businesses that provide food are to be commended for the "Meals With Friends" program that addresses a need and provides an opportunity to share a meal and friendship.
