Call ahead for trips to river towns

To the editor:

The devastation brought about by flooding in Iowa has certainly been a life-changing event for those who lost their homes and businesses, but the reporting on what has happened has almost turned into an anticipation for what has yet to take place.

As the floodwaters begin to recede in Iowa, attention has turned to communities downriver, among them towns like Hannibal and Cape Girardeau.

Yes, the Mississippi River is a source with which to be reckoned, and just like tornadoes in the plains and hurricanes on the coast, flooding is something that all river communities must be prepared for. But it is also important to remember that towns like Hannibal and Cape Girardeau are protected for the most part, and they are prepared to deal with flooding if it occurs. Both cities are surrounded by protective riverwalls that can be completely closed to hold back rising waters.

It doesn't help any of these towns when media outlets warn of catastrophes that have not occurred and may not occur at all.

The best advice is to call the local chamber of commerce or visitors bureau should you be planning a trip along the river this summer, sound advice for any family vacation regardless of the weather conditions. And if you visit Hannibal, Cape Girardeau or any other community along the Mississippi, be sure to venture to the riverfront to see a unique display of one of America's most powerful natural forces.
