KIT DOYLE ~ kdoyle@semissourian.com The swollen Mississippi River, facing south, from atop the closed Broadway flood gate in downtown Cape Girardeau on March 20. High river levels like this one have now caused organizers to move Libertyfest to the airport.

Saying they are "extremely disappointed," organizers of the 2008 Libertyfest and Air Show said today the event will move to Cape Girardeau Regional Airport.

"River levels are projected to be at a level that will not allow for the river activities required to hold this event," said Chris Hutson, Old Town Cape Board president, in a written statement. "Our first concern must be for the safety of everyone involved, not only the spectators but the performers, technicians and rescue personnel as well. The projected river levels are too high for us to be on the river. This is simply beyond our control."

The announcement indicates that event will be moved in its entirety and the schedule will remain intact.
