MEMPHIS, Tenn. —Johnny Wilbur Young, 86, of Memphis died Wednesday, June 4, 2008, at Saint Francis Hospital in Memphis.
He was born in Henson, Mo., son of John Sampson and Claudie O'Guin Young, and graduated from Illmo High School in Scott City. He was married to Audrey Lois Hammond Young for 62 years. She preceded him in death.
Young was a retired captain in the U.S. Navy, where he served for 35 years. He saw 25 duty stations, including Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. He earned the Silver Star and served two tours of duty in Korea and one in Vietnam.
Survivors include his two sisters, Francis Rhodes and Nina Young Sommers; a son, John Michael Young of Norfolk, Va.; a daughter, Lois Gwenn Young of Memphis; two grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his brother, James Edward Young.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Memphis Funeral Home Poplar Chapel in Memphis.
The funeral will be at noon Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial with full military honors will follow in West Tennessee Veterans Cemetery.
