Naming the armory

Efforts are underway to rename Jackson's National Guard armory after Staff Sgt. Bradley Skelton, who died earlier this year while serving in Iraq.

For those who haven't heard the story, Skelton, who was 40 years old when he died, came out of retirement to serve a second tour in Iraq. Skelton, a single man with no children, told others he wanted to serve again so another soldier who had children wouldn't have to. His temporary sacrifice turned into a permanent one.

Naming the armory after the Gordonville man seems like an honorable thing to do.

Others have suggested that Jeremy Shank, an 18-year-old who died in the line of duty, is also worthy of special honors. There are many ways to honor veterans who died in conflict. Surely our community can find ways to memorialize Shank as well.

These men, and all who have died while serving our country, deserve to be remembered in the most respectful ways.
