TUSCUMBIA, Mo. (AP) -- Two prisoners who were being booked into the Miller County jail Wednesday evening took two jailers hostage for about three hours before surrendering peacefully, Miller County Sheriff Bill Abbott said.
The prisoners took one male and one female jailer hostage about 8:30 p.m. as part of an escape plan, Abbott said. The jailers were carrying only mace at the time.
Roads around the jail were closed and the Missouri State Highway Patrol and other law enforcement officers were called in.
The inmates surrendered after about three hours of negotiations.
Abbott said the two jailers were taken to a hospital after their ordeal, but he did not release any information on whether they were hurt.
Information about the prisoners involved also was not released.
