Fair food article helps students

To the editor:

Thank you for Tom Harte's article about the food from the 1904 World's Fair.

I am finishing a three-week summer-school lesson on the topic of the fair. Students researched for five days learning all that they could about the fair.

They were allowed to copy and paste an information document for data for the backs of their books.

They spent another five days writing a historical fiction story about the fair.

Daily I shared facts that one class or another had learned to keep their interest going on the topic. Many incorporated data into their creative writing.

This third week we are making covers for our books, designing pictures using the Paint program to illustrate parts of their stories, printing out our covers, stories and information documents.

I read Harte's article orally to the class. Some information they already knew from their research. It seems the argument over the cone was the most remembered. But no one had found any mention of the Popsicle.

We plan to read orally to the class our stories. I think I will freeze Popsicles and bring treats to the kids. They worked so hard, and the stories are terrific.

Again, I thank Harte for his interesting article on food that was used in my classroom with the perfect timing of it being in your newspaper.
