Raising awareness about NF

To the editor:

May is NF Awareness Month. Neurofibromatosis is a genetic disorder that affects 1 in 3,600 births. It is characterized by tumors that grow randomly throughout the body on nerve endings. The tumors can be disfiguring and can lead to blindness, deafness and many other health problems for sufferers of NF.

I have made it a commitment to my daughter to do my part to bring awareness of this disorder, although she is only 9 years old and does not yet know that she has the disorder. She was diagnosed when she was 9 months old and is currently doing great.

It is a "time will tell" disorder, and we take one day at a time and hope for the best. To learn more about the disorder, you may visit www.ctf.org.
