Opinion: Political interest

Friday, June 18, 2004

Springfield (Mo.) News-Leader

College students care less about politics than they did four years ago. That's according to a survey conducted for the Leon and Sylvia Panetta Institute, a public policy think tank at California State University, Monterrey Bay. ...

Those of us who know college students need to ask them what they've learned about their government. And what do they think they're being educated for? The next president will make major decisions regarding foreign policy, military action and the economy. He will fill vacancies on the Supreme Court as well as other federal judgeships across the country.

The direction of the war on terror will also hinge on the results in November. This is a sobering warning about the state of our democracy. We must convince more students to get involved, pay attention and vote.
