Abused animals

The incidence of animal neglect in Southeast Missouri seems to be increasing, either because of better vigilance on the part of the public or because more of these cases involve such large numbers of animals and make for widely disseminated news stories.

A recent case involving 15 horses near Fruitland underscored the problem and also highlighted how the public's concern is best channeled through official agencies.

If you see or suspect animal neglect, the best thing to do is call the police, if you live in a city, or the sheriff's department, if you live in the county. These agencies have good working relationships with animal shelters and humane societies. In particular, humane societies are equipped to deal with large-scale animal rescues and have the ability to find good homes for abused animals.

The concern of the public and its vigilance are to be commended, but take advantage of the official resources available in cases like this.
