Mo. to begin using new license plates in June

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- Missourians who renew their vehicle registrations after June 16 will get new license plates. Most motorists will need to pay an extra $2.78 to get a set of the new license plates. Those with customized plates will have to pay $4.25. That's added to the normal registration fees. The new license plates will feature a bluebird sitting on a small hawthorn branch. The bluebird is the state bird. The hawthorn is the state floral emblem. The design won 56 percent of an Internet vote last year. The plates fade from white on top to aquamarine on the bottom with darker blue letters and numbers. In the background will be an outline of the shape of Missouri. Missouri's current license plates have been in use since 1997.
