ST. LOUIS (AP) -- The U.S. Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday tapped a senior partner of St. Louis-based brokerage Edward Jones as its new chairman.

John Bachmann, elected by the Chamber's board to a one-year term as chairman, has served on the Chamber's board since 1995 and has been regional vice chairman since 2001.

During his term as chairman, Bachmann expects to focus on such issues as tort reform, greater access to health care, benefits of trade, and reforming the retirement system he called "unsustainable."

"The Chamber is fortunate to have as its chairman someone with John's tremendous experience," Thomas Donohue, the agency's president and chief executive, said in a statement. "He will provide valuable leadership in the Chamber's effort's to advance a pro-business agenda in the courts, in the Congress and in the regulatory agencies."

Bachmann has served as a board member of the Chicago Stock Exchange and served two consecutive terms as the Securities Industry Association's chairman.

He is a board member of American Airlines parent AMR Corp., Monsanto Co. and the National Association of Securities Dealers.
