Our safety rests on sales-tax vote

To the editor:

It is upsetting that so many people have an instant and negative reaction to the word "taxes." Why don't we ask ourselves what level of services we want and expect as citizens and ask what level of pride we want to have in our hometown? Do we want to be able to feel safe in our homes, whether from fire or crime? Do we want to support the police officers and firemen who literally risk their lives to keep us safe every day by ensuring that they have the resources they need to perform their jobs safely and effectively?

We find it extremely ironic that in this bastion of conservative America that the citizens of Cape Girardeau are not lining up at the polls already to show their resounding support for those who do so much every day for each and every one of us. We hope that those of you who vote against the proposed tax increase can look a Cape Girardeau policeman or fireman in the eye the next time you see him/her. These are the professionals who will save your life or protect your home or your family in a time of crisis. Do the right thing. Vote yes for the tax increase. The safety of your family and mine depends on it.

JEFF, DONNA ROSANSWANK
