Officers honored for their service

To the editor:

On Memorial Day we remembered those who have risked their lives for their country, cities and families. The holiday was not about fishing feasting and relaxing in front of some TV but to honor, respect and uplift those who have served our country and communities.

As we awoke Monday morning to go about our day, one of our finest did not. Rhonda Westrich, a Cape Girardeau County detective, wife and mother of three passed away in her sleep. She will be missed by her family, friends and the men and women who worked with her.

Her youngest son made the comment, "I wish the rapture would occur today." Christians know what he is talking about.

Surely the fact that the police and fire personnel are in such highly stressful jobs justifies us giving them a decent wage.

From this day forth we will remember Rhonda for her service for us. Thank you to all the fire, police and medical personnel for what they do.
