Notre Dame puts 27 runs on the board to beat Scott City

Blake Essner hit a grand slam as the Notre Dame baseball team destroyed visiting Scott City 27-1 in five innings Tuesday afternoon.

The Bulldogs had 20 hits to Scott City's three. Tony Longman led the Bulldogs (9-4) with four hits, including a home run, and seven RBIs.

Lee Essner pitched three innings for his fifth win.

Cory Huskey pitched a one-hitter as host Central romped in five innings. Huskey struck out six and walked two. The only hit he allowed was a home run.

Central (4-8-1) scored six first-inning runs. Sean Bard had two hits and two RBIs.

Kelly 12, Portageville 11

Jonathan Simpher hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning as Kelly held off host Portageville.

Kent Deason pitched seven innings and overcame six errors to pick up his second win. Simpher and Danny Wilson led Kelly (4-3) with three hits apiece.

Leopold had a runner on second with two outs, but its seventh-inning rally fell short at home.

The Wildcats scored five in the final frame, but could not overcome a deficit that was 10-1 after 3 1/2 innings. Samantha Bueter led Leopold with three hits, including two doubles, and five RBIs.

Kacie Ritter led a 16-hit Advance (6-2) attack with four hits. Dana Williams was the winning pitcher.

Notre Dame's girls finished first and the boys were second in a three-team meet at Sikeston.

Katie Daniel and Amber Karnes won two events each for Notre Dame, which swept the relays. Notre Dame finished with 88.5 team points, 20 ahead of Sikeston.

The Sikeston boys finished with 120 points, followed by Notre Dame's 59.

Perryville won the boys division of the 15-team meet with 117.5 points, followed by Ste. Genevieve (83), Farmington (69), Festus (61) and Jackson (60).

The Pirates won seven events. Double individual winners were Kyle Dobbelare, in the 110 and 300 hurdles; and Jesse Whistler, in the 100 and 200 dashes. Dobbelare set a meet record in the 110 hurdles.

Jackson had wins from Isaac Venable (800), Andy Glass (shot put) and Brad Crader (discus).
