James Eugene "Coach" Allen, 83, of Cape Girardeau died Sunday, March 21, 2004, at Southeast Missouri Hospital.
He was born Oct. 10, 1920, in Fulton, Ky., son of Leo Eugene and Mary Lee Hughes Allen. He and Vonda Jean Brasher were married Nov. 25, 1948, in Cape Girardeau.
Mr. Allen coached and taught in Cape Girardeau Public Schools 43 years. He taught history and physical education, and coached football, basketball and track. He helped start the summer baseball leagues for the youth of Cape Girardeau.
He was honored at Jim Allen Night Oct. 27, 1983, by Cape Girardeau Public Schools for his years of service. He was loved and respected by all the students and athletes that came under his influence and guidance.
Mr. Allen was a member of First Baptist Church and Retired Teachers Association, and a lifetime member of VFW Post 3838.
He served in the U.S. Army from Oct. 14, 1942, to Dec. 27, 1945, serving in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He was awarded two Bronze Stars and four Overseas Bars.
Survivors include his wife, V.J. Allen of Cape Girardeau; a brother, Walter William Allen of St. Louis; two sisters, Mary Lou Lepler and Betty Jo Sanfillipo of Las Vegas, Nev.; a nephew, Alan Lepler of Grand Island, Neb.; two nieces, Karen Casey and Michelle Schuchardt of Las Vegas.
Friends may call at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home from 4 to 8 p.m. today.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Jay White officiating. Burial will be in Cape County Memorial Park.
