Jackson director of electric utilities, Don Schuette, said AmerenUE, which supplies power into the city, had a problem with a substation.
The power was off from about 10:25 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. in some places. Other parts of Jackson were restored more quickly through generators, Schuette said.
Schuette said word got out that the problem was with the Ameren substation, and many Jackson residents called the Ameren offices in Jefferson City, Mo., to issue complaints.
"In the future, what people need to do if the power goes out is call our 24-hour number," Schuette said. "There is no reason to call Ameren because the only Ameren customer is the city of Jackson."
Jackson's 24-hour emergency number is 243-2300.
