Chaffee improves to 6-0 this season

BRIAN ROSENER ~ Daily American Republic Central's Jordan Sheets hit out of a sand trap on the 12th hole Monday at Westwood Hills Country Club during the Poplar Bluff Invitational. He shot an 83 to finish tied for 16th.

Andrew Dooley knocked in three runs Monday to help the Chaffee baseball team remain undefeated this season.

Josh Steger knocked in a pair and smacked a double as the Red Devils beat Bloomfield 9-4 to improve to 6-0.

Russell Gardner went the distance for the win, striking out nine without walking a batter. All four runs were unearned.

Chaffee hosts Central today.

Garrett Stevens and Hide Tanaka both went 2-for-3 and drove in a pair of runs, but it wasn't enough for the visiting Tigers.

It was the fifth one-run loss for Central (3-8) this season.

Zach Wilson took the loss in relief, going 1 1/3 innings.

Josh Meyer started for Central. He lasted four innings, striking out two and walking four.

Nick Niemczyk blasted a pair of two-run homers to power the Cubs past the visiting Wildcats.

The Bulldogs scored all 10 runs in the fourth inning.

GOLF Poplar Bluff Invitational

Poplar Bluff easily won its own 12-team tournament, shooting 300 to finish 22 strokes ahead of Sikeston.

Central tied for the third-best score at 325, but placed fourth based on the No. 5 score. Two other local squads, Notre Dame (337) and Jackson (356), were sixth and seventh, respectively.

Poplar Bluff's Trent Hillis was the medalist with a 1-under 69 at Westwood Hills Country Club.

The top local scores were a 74 by Central's Tim Simmons, who finished fourth, and a 77 by Notre Dame's Brett Slaten.
