Saluting Dr. Cotner

There are so many individuals in our area who find ways to help others, but most of them would have a hard time keeping up with Dan Cotner, whose energy and constant motion are well-known. Cotner, a dentist, has used some of that energy over the years to provide free dental care on 16 trips outside the U.S. Some of those missions were sponsored by Rotary International. Cotner was a finalist this year in the Rotary Foundation Global Alumni Service to Humanity Award. Just being considered for such an international honor out of more than a million Rotarians around the world is high praise indeed.

Cotner, a member of the Rotary Club of Cape Girardeau for many years, has set the example for his fellow Rotarians. He has shown them how the Rotary motto, "Service above self," can be applied in ways that truly make the world a better place.

In addition to his willingness to volunteer for medical missions, Cotner also is a trombone player who has been a member of the Cape Girardeau Municipal Band for decades and plays with the Dixieland combo that greets visitors arriving on riverboats. He also has been the organist for his church and, over the years, has offered his many musical abilities to high school theatrical productions. He has been honored with the Southeast Missourian's Spirit of America Award, which is presented each Fourth of July during Libertyfest.

Cotner is an inspiration for countless individuals, young and old, who aspire to give back to the community and the world as much as they have received in their lifetimes. Congratulations, Dr. Cotner, and thanks for all you do.
