Parents of son in Navy suggest automobile insurance discounts to those serving in the military

To the editor:

We want to voice a complaint about auto insurance companies. Our son is in the U.S. Navy defending freedom. He has served in Iraq and is stationed in California. He has been looking for car insurance. He is 20 years old, doesn't drink or smoke and hasn't had a ticket or an accident. Why don't insurance companies give discounts to our service personnel? It is a disgrace to our country when our military is fighting for our freedom.

We have asked the insurance companies, "Do you give discounts to military personnel?" All answered, "No." Where would any of us be if it wasn't for our military? Our son joined the Navy to protect his country, as all military personnel are doing, but it seems as though insurance companies couldn't care less.

The insurance companies are too greedy to give a military discount in appreciation for this service to our country.

We don't think it is right for insurance companies to charge our young drivers such huge amounts for insurance. Why do we not give our young people a chance to prove themselves? Would it hurt to give them a six-month trial? If, in that time, they had an accident or received a ticket, then raise the rates.

Which insurance company will step forward and given our military a good discount in appreciation for their service to our country and give our young people a chance before penalizing them?
