City employees pay for dependents

To the editor:

In regard to Cape Girardeau's health-care plan, city employees pay 100 percent of the dependent cost. I think this is an important distinction to make. In the case of coverage for a spouse and children, the employee pays just under $500 a month. As we move forward with the city's financial situation, I think it is important for the voters to know the benefits we provide are in line with the private sector. Because of the high cost, many employees don't carry city health coverage on their dependents. They either go without insurance or buy coverage elsewhere.
