A single-vehicle accident that occurred late Tuesday morning on Highway K left one dead, but an autopsy will be performed to determine whether the fatality was due to a medical condition or a result of the wreck, said Cape Girardeau County Coroner John Clifton.

Michael W. Welter, 45, of Jackson, was driving eastbound toward Cape Girardeau on Highway K, approximately a quarter of a mile east of Highway 25, when the crash occurred, Clifton said.

Welter's 2002 Ford F-150 hit an embankment and overturned and the vehicle ended up in a ditch. Welter wasn't wearing his seat belt and was ejected from the truck.

He was pronounced dead around 12:40 p.m.

The autopsy will be performed Wednesday morning in Farmington, Mo., to determine the cause of death.
