Kinder drops out of governor's race

Saturday, February 9, 2008

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Republican Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder dropped out of the Missouri governor's race Friday night barely two weeks after he entered it, declaring he instead will seek re-election.

Kinder, of Cape Girardeau, announced his decision to hundreds of Republicans gathered for their annual Lincoln Days conference after first saying that he had received encouraging support from grassroots organizers, fundraisers, the business community and others.

"I will nonetheless stand down from the governor's race here tonight in the interest of the larger cause you and I share. I will run for re-election as lieutenant governor," said Kinder, receiving a standing ovation from fellow Republicans.

Kinder was the first candidate to enter the governor's race following Republican Gov. Matt Blunt's surprise announcement Jan. 22 that he will not seek re-election this year. At the time, Kinder declared there was no chance he would change his mind.

But after Kinder entered the race, so did Treasurer Sarah Steelman and U.S. Rep. Kenny Hulshof, suddenly creating a potential three-way Republican primary.

Some Republican Party insiders had been working to winnow down the gubernatorial field in order to avoid a potentially costly and contentious primary. Their intent is to try to clear the field for Hulshof.

Hulshof said Kinder informed him he would be dropping out of the race before officially making the announcement. Hulshof declined to say whether Kinder pledged to support his candidacy, but Hulshof added that he was supporting Kinder's lieutenant governor's candidacy.

"We're going to make a great team," Hulshof said.

Kinder left the room quickly and declined to comment after making his announcement.

A smiling but surprised Steelman said Kinder had not told her in advance that he was quitting the governor's race.

"It doesn't change my plans," Steelman said. "I'm in to stay."

But other Republicans quickly began speculating that Steelman, like Kinder, would change her resolute stance.

"I think the next thing you're going to see is Steelman pulling out" and instead running for re-election as treasurer, said Harvey Tettlebaum, of Jefferson City, a Republican Party lawyer.

The lone Democratic gubernatorial candidate is Attorney General Jay Nixon, who has been campaigning for the office already for several years.

Kinder's departure from the governor's race surprised some supporters who were in full force at the Republican conference, wearing green campaign T-shirts and passing out "Peter Kinder for Governor" stickers.

He built up to his announcement by first retracing, for 10 minutes, his political path from the time he stuffed envelopes for Barry Goldwater's 1964 gubernatorial campaign to the point when he led the Republican takeover of the Missouri Senate and eventually became lieutenant governor.

"The reason to mention all that is to say that since my earliest days of involvement, the reason for being involved has been larger than any one person," Kinder said. "It has been emphatically not about me. It's about the cause you and I share, and it's about preventing the fate that awaits Missouri if Jay Nixon ever becomes governor of this state."

Republican Party chairman Doug Russell said Friday that a gubernatorial primary wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing for the party.

But "obviously, I would prefer not to have a primary," Russell said.

Peter could have won, but it was going to be an uphill battle in a year that could be tough on Republicans. He did the right thing to avoid a party fight; too bad the other candidates didn't have the same degree of party loyalty. Good luck, Peter, in your re-election bid for Lt. Gov.

He didn't have a snowball's chance.

Jason, why didn't he have a Snowballs chance?

Whoever wins the Republican nomination, I hope remembers the taxpayers and property owners. The national party is just following the Democrat's line and have forgotten us. The state party needs to protect us against the whims of Washington, especially against the most likely choices for president.

He's afraid of Hulshoff. Hulshoff has a better personality than Kinder has, and is well-liked and not as vitriolic.

Something is cooking somewhere. Blunt has an agenda, so does Kinder. Blunt didn't just decide after 4 years, he wants to stay home with family. And Kinder, he's got the gov's mansion as a destination, but not just yet. They got a plan. Do you think that Blunt would make a good running mate as VP?

What's the problem with having a competitive primary? Too often times the back room politics selects candidates and we the voters do not have much a choice. There is nothing wrong with hearing new perspectives and how each indiviudal would approach the current and impending challenges.

Steelman should follow suit.

Think Tom made a strong point. Party loyalty, never what is good for the state or nation, just party loyalty. This is the problem we face in our country today.

That is what will get the Republicans defeated all across the nation and in the national campaign. Party loyalty.

Yea and Nay. Yea Kinder is out of the race, because he has no guts ! And Nay because he would have lost in the primary in a three way race to a woman, and we would have gotten rid of him at last.I will suport Jackson for Lt.Gov. now.

Peter Kinder is an arrogant creep. I needed his help about four years ago and he told me he didn't have time to help me and I was wasting his time. He should be in a pig sty because he could care less about his constituents.

Is there a single Republican in the state who can stand on his/her own two feet? Or do they all blindly do what the Party powers tell them? Gutless Bond quits because the Party tells him to. Kinder drops out because the Party tells him to. Who exactly is running the Republican Party and carrying this kind of power anyway?

Rush told him to do it.

Pigtails, I think you're a creep. One, pigtails? Come on. Two, Peter Kinder is a friend of mine. It had nothing to do with a deal, or weakness, or anything other than we have worked for the conservative cause all of our lives. Peter saw what happened in 1992 and we do not ever want to see it happen again, there are still hard feelings over that primary. I'm glad to see someone finally put people before politics and personal ambition.

Anyone remember Wayne Cryts and the other farmers that Kinder hounded to gain prominence? He hounded them in The Guardian, another newspaper in Cape for a short time. Several farmers were forced out of business as a result. A book was written a couple of years ago about the whole mess. After that come out, Kinder sort of faded from the picture. Looks like more than a few farmer's lives were ruined. What goes around comes around. Remember the old adage, how can you tell if a politician is lying, is his lips moving?

Wasn't he and Dave Barklage roomies?

-- Posted by jason37. on Sat, Feb 9, 2008, at 11:10 PM

I have only met and talked to Peter Kinder once, and that has been several years ago. My impression of him at that time was very favorable. If you will notice, most of the posts about Peter are emotional. What one would expect to hear about peter, is on his record while in his different offices.

Nothing to do with Peter, but on the subject of morality, it is none of my business unless it affects me. I do have an opinion on the subject. The difference between liberals and conservatives, since they both wish to increase the size of government, is what they consider moral. Neither label would be elected on their principles.

Yeah Jason, him and David were roomies, whoopie do. People have been trying to play that game on Peter for years. Once again, you obviously do not know Peter but you come on here just to trash a good man. You almost sound jealous. In fact, I think I know who you are and you should be jealous. And Woot, Peter didn't harass anyone. If I remember correctly, it was Wayne Cryts pointing shotguns at people. The book you're referring to was written by that numb nut WAyne Cryts himself. I'm sure it's real objective and you're probably the only loser that read it.

Hulshof is going to be surprised as to how strong the candidacy of Jay Nixon is going to be. . .

When the skeletons in the closet began to be counted was the actual number higher than expected?
