ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Mayor Francis Slay says the city of St. Louis will help try to find new jobs for 850 Macy's employees who were laid off.
Slay says losing the jobs is a blow to the city's downtown economy, but won't stop massive redevelopment that is under way.
Slay says there are roughly 90,000 jobs in the downtown economy so the Macy's layoff won't be a catastrophe.
Macy's is cutting the jobs as part of a company-wide restructuring plan.
Slay says the St. Louis Agency on Training and Employment will help the workers try to find new jobs with other regional employers.
