Report: Embattled KC parks board member resigns

Tuesday, January 22, 2008

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Kansas City parks board member Frances Semler reportedly has resigned, citing the controversy over her membership in the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps.

Kansas City radio station KMBZ reports Tuesday that it received a fax saying it was from Semler, who was appointed to the Board of Parks and Recreation Commissioners by Mayor Mark Funkhouser. The fax said Semler has had enough.

Funkhouser last June appointed Semler to the five-member park board, a move that triggered protest from minority groups. The National Council of La Raza voted in October canceled plans to hold its convention from Kansas City because of Semler
