Jackson school board members deserve a hand

To the editor:

The week of Jan. 25 to 31 has been declared School Board Recognition Week by the Missouri School Boards Association. It is a time for educators and residents to salute those unpaid volunteers who serve public education on behalf of their communities.

Jackson School Board members are dedicated residents who carry out the truest form of representative government: volunteer public service. In these challenging times, school board members are called on to be policy makers and often have to make tough decisions. As advocates, board members face a complex and often demanding job.

Jackson board members' service ensures that decisions about our public schools are made as close to the needs of our children and community as possible. Our board members serve as examples for our young people of the excellent tradition of volunteering that is a hallmark of our society.

School board members face challenges every day. For their untiring personal dedication and commitment to public service, let us give our school board members a hand: Gerald Adams (six years of service), Cathy Goodman (one year), Mack Illers (two years), Dr. T. Wayne Lewis (17 years), Teri Tomlin (two years), Brent Wills (four years) and Jim Woeltje (three years).
