Guinness confirms world record for simultaneous Mentos fountainsFriday, November 30, 2007Southeast Missouri now holds the world record for the most Mentos fountains launched at once. The notification from Guinness World Records came Thursday night, according to Jason Lindsey, the former KFVS12 science reporter who coordinated the launch at Arena Park on Oct. 3. The Guinnesss organization ruled that 973 fountains were launched, breaking the previous record of 850 Mentos fountains launched in the Netherlands in September. When the mint Mentos is added to soda, a reaction occurs that creates a geyser up to 30 feet high. Comments |

WONDERFUL! Thanks, Jason.
Yea!!!!!!
Next on the list... most water fountains on campus of any university.
alright! way to go everyone. I was there and man what a mess that made! But it was fun! Big thanks to Jason Lindsey and KFVS for doing it.
I second Rodney King. We need more fountains on the university campus. How about we start with creating a CID up and down Normal? We can tax something/someone and use that imaginary money to place fountains everywhere.
How about fountains filled with soda? And a statue or sculpture commemorating the connection between these new fountains (and the pursuit of our fountain record) and the mentos-soda fountains record that came before?
This would surely bring more tourist money to our city.
We should note that it says "Southeast Missouri" holds the record, not "Southeast Missouri State University". This was not a University event; rather it was a Southeast Missouri community event. Quips and shots should perhaps be directed at KFVS12 and local schools, etc. who sponsored and participated.
Why do so many people that blog, because they want to be heard....have to always be such a smart-@ss about either the article or another bloggers' comment?
Because of my comment--we will hear the smart-@sses again.
I am from the generation, "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all"
We know that this type of person is considered a "BULLY" in todays society.
I am thankful I don't have to be around such negative people, that I have a choice.
At least one person loves them. We all know they do not love themselves.
Please, don't misunderstand me. I was just being funny and light hearted. I think this was a great event and am proud to see it in the news.
Name calling is not nice.
I always got a "kick" outta Jason, he's nothin' but a big kid himself!
I don't watch the local news station any longer because of this crap. We get no NEWS...just fountains, breast cancer updates, recipes and cutesy, but aging, reporters to fill in the last two minutes.
Isn't the university still part of Southeast Missouri?
great guy, great cause.
Way to go Jason!
Way to go Jason, thank you for all your help on this. My kids loved participating in this event. I agree with conservababe. The local news station is always going after national stories and then tell us how it can happen here ie the bridge collapse in MN. That was the last straw for me. The way they ran with that you would think that every bridge in Southern Illinois and Missouri was unsafe. Oh and don't forget when someone loses a family member or has bad news happen to them they are in their face with a microphone asking "how they feel" when they have tears running down their face. They are like a bunch of vultures circling a gut wagon.
Did you know that if you chew Certs fast they give off sparks? (This is not a joke--cup your hands around your open mouth and chew a couple of them in the dark.) Maybe they could do that for the 4th of july?
LuckyEwe, I absolutely agree. My comment was meant to make the same statement you did, if you were referring to my post at all then I failed to make my point civilly, mea culpa. My intent was the same as yours; too many of the comments on these articles end up criticizing institutions, groups, businesses and other people.
This was a great event, along with Jason's other efforts, to show kids as well as adults that science can be fun, not just boring equations with Greek letters.
When people get interested in how things work, it serves as a stepping stone towards how to make things work better.
Perhaps with events like this - a possible future slogan could be 'the watch-me city of the show-me state'?? :-)
Must not be much to report on lately.
CalavoMan--
I totally "got" your comment also. I wonder if Mr. King and St.Louis did?
Glad to have someone in my choir! Thanks!!
We were there, we had a blast, the kids enjoyed launching the fountains, so did I,
thanks Jason, and everyone who help to make this event happen,. It was extreemely messy, had to wash our clothes 3 times to get all of the soda out, but it was worth it...
WELL DONE CAPE GIRARDEAU!
WAY TO GO !!
