Gov. seeks ban on licenses for illegal immigrantsTuesday, November 27, 2007Gov. Matt Blunt unleashed his latest proposal Monday in a flurry of legislation aimed at cracking down on illegal immigration. The proposed law, Blunt said at a news conference held at the Cape Girardeau Police Department, would specifically prohibit illegal aliens from obtaining driver's licenses, penalize those who are here illegally and punish those who help illegals obtain licenses. The state already has safeguards intended to prevent illegal immigrants from getting driver's licenses, but Missouri lacks a specific law prohibiting it, Blunt said. The penalties are still open for discussion, but Blunt suggested making the first offense a class B misdemeanor for someone who knowingly aids an illegal immigrant fraudently in obtaining a driver's license. "It has to be strong enough to serve as a deterrent," Blunt said. The charges would then escalate with every repeat offense, he said. Blunt said the proposal was spurred by the recent action of New York's governor in sponsoring a plan to issue driver's licenses to illegal immigrants. "That doesn't make sense in Missouri," he said. Driver's licenses are issued in Missouri by the Department of Revenue through scores of contractor-run offices around the state. People who are not U.S. citizens currently can get Missouri driver's licenses by showing a federal form validating their lawful presence. Their status also is checked through a federal database, department spokesman David Griffith said. Under a change made in 2005, those temporary licenses last only until the expiration of that person's approval to be in the United States, Griffith said. Previously, noncitizens could receive Missouri driver's licenses with standard expiration dates, meaning their licenses could have remained valid after their approval to be here had ended, he said. Earlier this year, New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer proposed giving driver's licenses to illegal immigrants, but he eventually withdrew that plan. Oren Shur, a spokesman for Democratic Attorney General Jay Nixon's gubernatorial campaign, said Blunt's proposal doesn't offer anything new. "Giving licenses to illegal immigrants is already against the law in Missouri," Shur said. "The Blunt administration issues all the driver's licenses in the state, so if they have been giving licenses to illegal immigrants, then the governor has some explaining to do." Nixon also opposes giving driver's licenses to illegal immigrants. The proposed legislation is the latest in a series of plans in Blunt's battle against illegal immigration, which began in late August. Already, Blunt has asked state law enforcement officers to check the immigration status of every person presented for incarceration. He said Monday that officers so far have turned 110 illegal immigrants over to federal authorities for detention. Blunt also is pushing for state law enforcement officers to become deputized so they can enforce federal immigration law. He cited recent discussions between the Immigrations and Customs Enforcement Office in Chicago, the Department of Homeland Security, and support from U.S. Rep. Jo Ann Emerson in assisting in the ongoing process. It should be completed soon, he said. Blunt also has asked for tighter oversight of state-financed construction projects to ensure contractors who get state incentives don't use illegal immigrants. Good start. Next should be a city ordinance banning landlords from renting or leasing to illegal aliens.
Deportation, no social security, no aid of any kind, no license..........come here legally, don't stay or over stay their green card ( or whatever color it is ) and this isn't just for people from the south. This is for anyone from any country. We keep hearing of bad things people are doing and they've been in the US for 3-5-13 years on a study visa or such......weed them all out, thank you to our and all governors who follow this plan of action. If you want to come to the US, come through the proper channels like our forefathers did at Elis Island, pledge allegience to the flag of the United States, learn English, learn the American 'way' or go back to the country you still honor over the US.
I took a survey the other day to see who I'm in line with for President and there wasn't a single candidate that I saw that insisted that English be the primary language of the U.S.A.
OnTheFence: There's a reason for presidential candidates to be against English as our national language, and to be for giving illegal immigrants health care, education, etc. They want (need) those votes from the legal Hispanics in this country. Same reason so many are for continuing the divisive and destructive racial/minority programs. It's not about people, it's about garnering the votes from as many minority groups as possible.
Get them depended on government and you will have a vote for life.
You think the Governor would have this same policy over his inner circle. Let's see how tough this Governor is on illegal immigration and illegal activities associated with this when his buddy Nathan Cooper comes up for sentencing. And why has the sentencing been delayed twice and this is what Nathan Cooper's brother has been telling people who will listen: Copper's younger brother (Ryan), a Springfield area resident, has apparently told interested individuals that they needn't worry about Nathan turning state's evidence against any of the political players who participated in the fee office scheme or other pay-to-play shams. His claim is that Cooper's former running buddies --such as James Harris, Jeff Roe, Garrett Lott and Andy Blunt--have assured him that he will receive a pardon in the final days of the George W. Bush administration so long as he stays mum in the meantime. So let's see what out great Governor does with his "tough" stance on illegal immigration.
Contact Randy Terril about passing the same laws as Oklahoma!!!!

Keep the illegals out any way we can. I'm up for any ideas.
You want to know something funny? The Mexicans who come here legally (meaning, get their "green card," start the citizenship process, etc.) have a higher work ethic than many Americans. Some of them hold onto that work ethic; many become "Americanized" and lose it.
We have many laws in place regarding illegal immigrants, but they are not enforced. A year or so ago, there were several articles stating that we do not deport illegals because we do not have the financing or personnel to do so. The answer apparently lies in enforcing the laws, and demanding that there be absolutely NO illegal hiring, no illegals renting homes, no illegals given health care, education, no automatic citizenship for the babies of illegals who are born here, etc. Our politicians know full well that if we did these things, within a few years the Mexican people would realize that America is not a desirable place for them, unless they do as their own government demands, and come into the country legally.
On top of all that, we should expect anyone living in our country to at least have a basic knowledge of English!
More pointless talk from the governor. If you want to target illegal immigrants go after employers. Cut off the money and you'll see 95% of the illegals go elsewhere. Going after drivers licenses, landlords or going to the expense of deporting immigrants is useless. As long as illegal immigrants can make substantially more money here they will have fake IDs, squat in abandoned buildings, and cross the border repeatedly to improve their their economic wellbeing.
If we don't have the guts to go after employers then it is needless cruelty to target these mostly hard working individuals and make their lives even more unnecessarily difficult and more dependent on the black market to supply their needs.
