Review: Former idol Daughtry gets Cape's voteFriday, November 16, 2007Chris Daughtry seems to have settled into this rock star gig with ease. But after weathering a season of "American Idol" and taking his five-piece Daughtry on the road for a year, a guy probably gets used to pleasing the crowd. Thursday night Daughtry brought the band that's named for him to the Show Me Center, flexing the strong vocal chops that made him the "American Idol" resident rocker and putting on a strong show for a large crowd of adoring fans, many of them females with a penchant for screaming "We love you, Chris." The band played before 3,712 people. Two openers warmed up the crowd -- the Nashville, Tenn., hard rock four-piece Day of Fire and the Los Angeles melodic rock outfit You Are I Am. Day of Fire seemed to impress the crowd with its high-octane sound that includes strong hints of hard rockers Stone Temple Pilots. Frontman Josh Brown, formerly of once up-and-coming band Full Devil Jacket, stomped around the stage with true rock-star swagger. He howled, he sprayed water on the crowd, he told the people to sing along. While Brown's prodding didn't get the crowd totally engaged in Day of Fire's music, the band received a warm round of applause at the end of its set. You Are I Am didn't fare as well. With a sound reminiscent of British melody bands like Coldplay and Muse, the band's set was far more subdued than Day of Fire's. Some points in You Are I Am's set saw the crowd waving cell phone lights in the air. But for the most part, the energy was flat, and the end of its set was met with relative silence. But when Daughtry took the stage, the Show Me Center erupted. His band came out first, building up the anticipation. When the man Daughtry took the stage, the crowd roared. The band blazed through hard-rocking, post-grunge anthems like "Crashed" and "Used To," employing heavy distortion and feedback squeals for a heavy sound. Daughtry posed like a true rock star, squeezing every ounce of emotion out of every note of the hits off his triple platinum debut "Daughtry." Chris Daughtry had the crowd in the palm of his hand, easily getting them to sing along to every word of his super hit "It's Not Over." On each song, the former "Idol" contestant displayed the strong vocals that got him where he is -- a bona fide hitmaker whose songs can be heard on Top 40 and rock stations at any point of the day. But Daughtry also showed his soft side, picking up an acoustic guitar and going solo in the middle of the set, driving his female fans even wilder. Each song, whether hard-rocking and angry or gentle and reflective, was well executed by Daughtry and his four bandmates. Daughtry's music straddles the line between pop and rock, and at Thursday night's concert the band seemed to please an audience looking for both. The sound was polished, and Daughtry showed why his career continues to rise following his "Idol" days, while other former contestants are more quickly forgotten. 335-6611, extension 182 Comments |

To say that the band You Are I Am didn't fare as well is an understatement. At first I think many people thought when he came out that he was Chris Daughtry (especially us in the nose-bleed sections) because he had the same shaved head appearance, but once he started singing it didn't take long to figure out he wasn't Chris. When Daughtry finally made it to the stage they were very good.
Was Matt Sanders even there last night?? The band Day of Fire was not recieved nearly as well as You Are I Am. Day of Fire has talent...vocally, but they are trying to tap into a form of vocals that do not work well for them. The lead singer is decent with a crowd, but the sunglasses and the changing of the masks was not entertaining.
You Are I Am did an outstanding job, and were VERY well recieved by the audience. The members of that band even came out and worked the crowd. Don't be suprised to see them make something of themselves here in a year or so.
Daughtry did an excellent job of rocking Cape last night. Sitting in the show, I heard people talking that he was tired of doing this and that he was a jerk. Well...last night you would have never known it. That is a performer that knows how to work an audience. He was interactive and entertaining. He has enourmous talent, and if he is tired of doing venues such as ours, you couldn't tell it.
You Are I Am made was depressing...not joking. It was horrible. Especially for them to open for a rock band?? What a buzzkill. Day of Fire wasn't too bad, you just couldn't understand the screaming and what was up with the mask?? For Daughtry, HE ROCKED THE HOUSE...I just wish he would've sang the entire 'Walk the Line'. Daughtry was awesome!!! :)
Being from the over 30 crowd I was a little apprehensive about going to his concert. Enjoyed Mr Daughtry on American Idol so wanted to see him live. The opening two acts were ok, keeping in mind that for the most part they aren't as main stream like Mr Daughtry. But after the concert I was able to see the interaction of You Are I Am with the fans that were there. They totally appreciated the fact that there were people there to hear them sing and want to talk to them after the concert. I believe they have their place on the tour.
Oh, and to the very young girl behind me during Mr Daughtry's set. I totally understand that you find him wonderful, but while in the middle of a song, he can not hear you screaming at the top of your lungs that you love him. Only those seated close to you could. In prepairing for your next concert, you might want to wait until he is done singing and before the next song to screach out your aderation. Just an old guy venting mind you.
I enjoyed Day of Fire, but you could tell that their style just wasn't meshing so well with the crowd, but I enjoyed them and I would like to see them at a smaller venue. As for You Are, I Am, they were a very good band, but they just seemed to drag a bit too much, very fan friendly though. I did get to talk with them after their set and they were super nice guys. As for Daughtry, I was impressed with his vocals, I didn't expect him to have that much range, but it sounded very good. Plus, the Alice in Chains cover was AWESOME!!!! Being an AiC fan, that alone made my night. Not my cup of tea, but not a bad show altogether and I was glad to see a good crowd there.
You are I Am was a anti-war, gay lovefest. It was sickening.
Now Daughtry kicked A**!
