Delta overcomes Lance's 53 points to win tournament

DELTA, Mo. -- Delta's girls basketball team overcame 53 points by top-seeded Twin Rivers' Amanda Lance to win the Delta New Year's Tournament 81-69 on Saturday.

"We felt like if we could take away her assists and shut down the other girls we'd have a shot," Delta coach Randy White said.

Second-seeded Delta (9-1) trailed 15-11 after the first quarter but used a 27-14 scoring margin in the second to grab the lead for good. Delta freshman Shea Smith led the Bobcats with 24 points. Sarah Cook added 15 points, Kaci Menz had 10 and Becky Rozmirsky had 14.

Lance, who finished the tournament with 118 points, was the only scorer in double figures for Twin Rivers.

In the third-place game Chaffee (5-6) beat Woodland 52-41. Kegan Orr led the Red Devils with 13 points and Mallory Kiefer had 10.

Courtney Glastetter led Woodland with 15 points.

St. Vincent (5-6) beat Oran in the consolation final 62-44. Rachel Hadler led four double-digit scorers for the Squaws with 14 points. Allison Prost had 13, Sierra Paulus added 12 and Laura Gremaud had 10.

Tiffany Glastetter led the Eagles with 14 points.

Marquette Invitational

Central went 2-2 in pool play and finished third in its pool at the Marquette Mustang Invitational.

Central won duels against Soldan and Mehlville and lost against Liberty and Eureka. Due to injuries, the Tigers were wrestling with four open slots, the equivalent of giving each team a 24-0 lead before wrestling a single match.

"The kids wrestled really well," Central coach Josh Crowell said.

Central's Chris Griffith (103) and Jonathan Poston (125) each finished second with records of 4-1 at the tournament. Wrestlers finishing in the top four medaled for the tournament.

Matt Latham finished 4-1 at 119 and placed third. Dan Coonce (135) and Jason Poole (189) each finished in fourth with 3-2 records. Tyler Yeargain and Josh Smoot placed sixth and Garret New and John Moseby placed seventh.

Other events

  • Central's junior-high "A" team defeated Poplar Bluff 44-41 to improved to 7-1. Shane Nolen led Central with 14 points and Garrett Stevens added 11. Behind 21 points by Adrian Cox, Central won the "B" game 41-39.

    Jackson's JV wresling squad featured five individual champions in a seven-team meet it hosted on Saturday. Champions for Jackson were Josh Conklin (130), Jordan Barnhart (140), Blake Gorton (145), Anthony Werner (152) and Drew Lowes (189).
