Music festival

Cape Girardeau's annual downtown music festival -- in its 11th year -- has a new name (River City Music Festival), an earlier-in-the-year time frame, scaled-back hours and more business and community support. The festival kicks off tonight and continues through Saturday night with more than 40 bands and performers in the lineup.

The festival adds to one of the busiest arts-and-entertainment weekends of the whole year in Cape Girardeau: First Friday artwalk, Saturday's opening of the SEMO District Fair, plus other events in and around Cape Girardeau throughout the weekend. For a complete list, be sure to read the first edition of the Southeast Missourian's new arts and leisure weekly magazine called SELive, which made its debut Thursday.

Music festivals offer an opportunity to enjoy your favorite bands and allows the bands to reach appreciative audiences. The River City Music Festival organizers hope this year's event will have something special for everyone.,

Battle of the bar bands? Spoken like it was a bad thing? I'm no fan of live music, but;

Bagpipes are for St Pattie's Day and cool funerals with "Amazing Grace," thrumming in the background.

Taiko Drums go to New York, I'm positive there is some welfare recipient banging them, expertly, on a street corner.

Barbershop quartets...Mike your really showing your age.

Went downtown - no Tunes at Twilight -no sign letting anyone know anything was canceled. The leadership should have made provisions for inclement weather - and let people know something. Poor planning, good luck getting anyone to attend next year.

I don't think the city is putting this event on. it is the music heritage group.

I wasn't planning on attending Friday, but I heard all over that the show would canceled due to rain. I heard it on radio. Its a pretty new device, I know.

Diversity in this Cape music scene, is pretty tough. People like basically the same things...loud, screaming, and banging. Some bands are grasping to the 80s, because Big Hair bands were what made them happy in highschool, before they dropped out.

Other bands like to go WAY back to the 1970s and hope that enough rouge can cover up the wrinkles during "Radar Love."

Still other bands like to do covers for more recent music. Like the group that did a metal version of "If You Want to Be My Lover," by the Spice Girls. Pretty interesting.

Love to see a Barber Shop Quartet do Pantera.
