Missourian sports department announces changes, addition

Thursday, August 23, 2007

Kevin Winters Morriss will take the helm as sports editor of the Southeast Missourian, effective Sept. 1.

Winters Morriss, currently the assistant sports editor, succeeds Toby Carrig, who will devote more time to his duties as sports editor of Semoball.com, the regional Web site that includes content from the Southeast Missourian as well as other daily newspapers in the region as well as unique content such as video, blogs and photo galleries.

Winters Morriss was hired as the assistant sports editor for the Southeast Missourian in March 2007.

He previously had been the assistant sports editor and acting sports editor in Wisconsin for four daily newspapers, including the Wausau (Wis.) Daily Herald.

He earned his bachelor's degree from Loyola University Chicago and his master's from Syracuse University.

Carrig has been with the Southeast Missourian since January 2004 and previously was sports editor at the Beaumont (Texas) Enterprise and served as sports editor and managing editor for several publications in Missouri and Illinois during his 14 years of service with the Suburban Journals of St. Louis.

The sports department also recently added Christopher Smith as the primary high school reporter.

Smith, from Boston, did his undergraduate work at Merrimack College in Massachusetts and also received a master's degree from Syracuse University.
