Cape wins openerin state tourney
The Cape Girardeau Senior Babe Ruth baseball team opened the state tournament Thursday in Charleson with an 11- 2 victory over Booneville.
Cape improved to 15-8 with the win and advanced to today's 2 p.m. second-round game against Charleston in the seven-team, double-elimination tournament.
Winning pitcher Chris Hanback allowed nine hits in seven innings. He struck out eight and walked one.
Abe Dirnberger had three hits, including an inside-the-park home run and a double, in Cape's 15-hit attack. Luke Moll also had a double among his three hits while Jacob Valleroy, Blake Gaddis and Chad Friend had two hits apiece.
Cape broke open a 5-2 game with two runs in the sixth and four in the seventh.
Scott County winsstate title
The Scott County Warriors went undefeated to win the Cal Ripken 12-year old division at the Major Missouri State tournament in Boonville, Mo. The team was comprised of boys from Bell City, Oran, Kelso, New Hamburg and Benton. It beat teams from Lebanon, Mineral Area and New Madrid County.
The team travels to the Midwest Plains Regional Tournament in Yankton, S.D., on Tuesday.
Ashcraft, Dickersonplace in tournament
Gary Ashcraft and Doug Dickerson, both of Jackson, competed in the Vetta Concord Summer Shoot-out racquetball tournament in St. Louis recently.
Ashcraft took second in the C division with a 6-1 record.
Dickerson took third in the D division with a 7-1 record.
Mashek wins Chip-A-Ways outing
Bea Mashek took first place in the A-flight at the weekly Cape Chip-A-Ways golf outing.
Bonnie Miller and Doris Bremeyer tied for first in the B-flight.
Margie Kurre had the low putts and Lois Tweedy won the play of the day.
