Gender voting

IT IS embarrassing to realize how many women will vote for Hillary Clinton because she is a female with no regard for her potty-mouthed disdain for anyone whom she regards as beneath her. That includes the Secret Service agents who must guard and protect her. To think that our future president could be elected primarily because of her gender is to think that our country's women are, indeed, more emotional than they are intelligent.

Familiar words

U.S. SEN. Ted Kennedy's words of support for the 1965 immigration bill are the same chapter and verse of his support for the 1986 amnesty and the 2007 immigration bill: "First, our cities will not be flooded with a million immigrants annually. Under the proposed bill, the present level of immigration remains substantially the same. Secondly, the ethnic mix of this country will not be upset. Contrary to the charges in some quarters, [the bill] will not inundate America with immigrants from any one country or area."

Water park support

I REALIZE all of the old, rich, white Republicans (you know who you are) in Cape Girardeau are scared to death of passing a sales-tax increase to pay for a water park, but surely there are enough young, liberal (not greedy) people with young children in this town to push it through. There's no way everyone in Cape Girardeau is worried about paying higher sales taxes on their new Cadillacs every other year, is there? The city needs a water park, at a minimum, to attract additional tourist revenue. Let's vote yes on a tax increase to get a water park built here. The city could use the water park's eventual profits to pay for future projects. Isn't economics a wonderful thing?

No money for weeds

I'VE NOTICED tall grass along most of the highways and streets in Southeast Missouri. The problem is that we pay too little in fuel taxes to fund additional mowing. I do not think anyone wants to see higher fuel costs, so we are just going to have to deal with the tall grass.

Wasted justice

AS A police officer, I am appalled at the fact that Dennis McDonald is going to receive five days of shock time in the local jail for having a sign hanging outside his business. I have observed drug users, thieves and other criminals receive lesser sentences. What a complete waste of time in the criminal-justice system.

Listening to parents

THE SCHOOL board is back at it. Board members are not listening again. They don't want to listen, but they want us to approve bonds. This is one parent who will not vote for any more bonds. I will vote to elect new people when its time. Mr. Bertrand and Mr. Reinagel are the only ones who have any guts and convictions. They are the true mouthpieces for parents.

Let's not underestimate the intellect of the American voter--male or female. After all, was not George W. elected twice?

Gender voting --- your disdain for women comes through loud and clear.

-- Posted by calypso12 on Fri, Jun 22, 2007, at 7:00 AM

Not every female is deceived by the antics of female politicians. Not every female votes by emotions. Not every female is blinded by the 'give-a-ways' that politicians offer. This female is not a Hillary fan nor a Hillary voter. Not everyone, including this female, believes Hillary is even electable.

The "water park support" comment has to be a joke.

"The city could use the water park's eventual profits to pay for future projects. Isn't economics a wonderful thing?"

...eventual profits -- yes, in the year 2057 headline reads... Cape Girardeau City has finally reached the half way point of paying off the water park investment...

I wonder, did "Gender voting" save some of his/her vitriol for the "potty-mouthed disdain" of George "He's a real [a-hole]" Bush or Dick "[F*ck you]" Cheney?

Regarding the sign ordinance. Perhaps some civil disobedience is needed to overturn this ridiculous and unconstitutional law. Every retailer in the community should post a banner in solidarity with Dennis McDonald and refuse to take it down until the law is rescinded. A one-day strike by retailers might also get some attention. Something needs to be done to remind city leaders where their paychecks come from. If it wasn't for the retailers of this community, there would be no city here. The city's leadership is counting on disunity among the retailers. Let's show them they are wrong. And where or where is the official organization which is supposed to represent the businesses in Cape. Chamber of Commerce officials should hang their heads in shame if they are not working 24/7 to get rid of this sign ordinance.

Well said Elizabeth! Can we also add Nancy Pelosi to that list of embarrassments for the female population?! It is disheartening that the these two female politicians can not handle themselves in a more professional, service-minded manner. They do NOT speak for this female!

"Old rich white Republicans"? Look I now class warfare is a common tactic amongst tax and spend liberals or some republicans lately, but it is not Rich White Republicans that get hurt when taxes are raised. Or Low Income Liberals for that matter, It is just average Middle Class Citizens. Take a look at your own post and think logically. If a water park could be profitable in this area private industry would have already built one or would be ready to break ground. Private investors have obviously decided not to do it because it would be a losing venture. Stop trying to get government to do everything just because you and a few people think that we need something. Jeez what do you think we are a Communist Country. From each according to their means, To each according to their need. Wake up people and fight to save this Republic.

The person who said the city needs a water park is not rational. The city does not need a water park. There is a big difference between wants and needs, and a water park is a want.

I'm a participant on an online group of over 1000 ladies who share an interest in card-making. According to the site demographics, the average age is 36 and most of the ladies are from cities larger than Cape. I've noticed in the 2 years since I've been a member that most ladies seem to be fairly liberal in their politics. However, in a poll one of the members conducted, a large majority indicated they would NOT vote for Hillary Clinton. The concensus from comments was that she has some strengths but is not the person to lead this country. I think most women will see past her gender.

C'mon - we're not voting for Hillary because she is a woman - we're voting for her because of Bush and what that MAN has accomplished. She's smart - looks at the facts and is willing to change her mind over time.

P.S. Women are smarter than you think and we know when we're being played by your kind!

How do you get class warfare out of a $@#! water park?

-- Posted by godblessmurrika on Fri, Jun 22, 2007, at 11:14 AM

I'm not a "Greedy Rich White Republican" and I think that raising taxes for an unneeded water park is an IGNORANT idea. If Cape Girardeau wants more money from tourists, then the shop and restaurant owners downtown by the river need to be open on Sundays to get more business.

-- Posted by foodie on Fri, Jun 22, 2007, at 11:30 AM

godblessmurrika; If you had read my entire post and the speak out post that I was referring to it should be self explanatory.

The original poster made the comment that only old, rich, white republicans were afraid of higher taxes. Lets see RICH, White, Republicans. Sounds like class warfare to me.

Speakout has turned political lately. Politics is a waste of time and money, in my honorable opinion. Let's do what needs to be completed and let everyone live peacefully.

As opposed to a waterpark, how about a proper minor league ballpark? Taxpayers could get a break because the city and the university could contribute because Central High School and SEMO needs a proper stadium. I'm not saying the current bleacher setup in Capaha Park isn't adequate, but we need a proper ballpark. Marion, Illinois, with a population about half of Cape Girardeau, has a minor league team. With the correct marketing, corporate contributors such as Drury Hotels, Sears, Wally Mart, P&G, Buzzi Unicem, and the like could keep the park afloat for the first few years. Baseball Stadium > Waterpark.

-- Posted by ynot on Fri, Jun 22, 2007, at 1:30 PM

There is no question that a water park in Cape is not a necessity, but a want. However, I could name several things in Cape that are a want as well and yet the city has chosen to go forward with plans.

Do I think it's a good idea? YES Do I think taxes is the answer...remember I pay taxes too... NO I don't have the answer, but let's look at it for what it is. Most people don't want it because of the taxes, yet those same people would probably take advantage of using it if it were built without increasing taxes.

Most investors are too busy building banks (Lord knows there are way to many banks in Cape), eating places or new stores. I personally wish I had the money to invest in the water park. I would certianly be happy to invest in the lives of our young people. There is a lack of that in this community in more than one way. It would be a good idea to give them a place to go and for families to go and spend the afternoon without a huge drive.

Like U.S.Representative Charles Rangle of(N.Y.) says, "Bush has shattered the myth of white male supremacy once and for all."

Now is the time for a woman President who can see where the prioties are . . .

-- Posted by dbuch981 on Fri, Jun 22, 2007, at 5:45 PM

Give Hillary a break! When I hear her causes and the programs she tries to promote, I can hardly believe she feels superior toward others. I've heard and read the same about Nancy Reagan; but since she is the darling of many Cape Girardeau Republicans, it's probably acceptable for her to hold such feelings. I have never quite understood how all that works.

-- Posted by iago on Fri, Jun 22, 2007, at 6:13 PM

Who would be using this water park? Rich, stupid, white Republicans. Let them pay taxes for it. Better yet, build it and drown 'em in it.

-- Posted by godblessmurrika on Fri, Jun 22, 2007, at 8:12 PM

Ok Mike, You did it. by bringing the town cryer act to the opinion page you really got them talking. So here is my 2 cents. 1) WATER PARK sure as long as I dont have to pay for it. 2)Hillary NO, not as long as I have to pay for it. And 3)have you heard some where that your vote means anything to anyone? Last time I checked voteing for a third party is just a waste of a vote. By the way Dr. Ron Paul is like all the rest, he will tell you what you want to hear and drop the ball late in the 4th quarter. Good Luck, I'm going to vote for Rudy & Condie.

Michael, yes, that "if I--if you" malady seems to be very popular today, especially with the most righteous amongst us. The symptoms of this malady are selective memory and half-truths. Congratulations on being Rush free for 13 years. Thirteen minutes of listening to that mouth was exactly 12.5 minutes too much for me.

Nephi, regarding the sign ordinance, we tried to get organized when this unconstitutional, poorly written ordinance was enacted. However, the support that we received from business owners was in the form of "I support you in what you are trying to acheive, but I can't speak out pubically about it because I can't afford to get a black eye in this town." In other words business owners are afraid of the back lash from the city if they speak out. They can and will get even with you. There is not a building in this town that the city inspector could not find something wrong with it and effectively shut your business down. What we need to do is get organized and unseat the Mayor and Council. I am ready and able.
