Cape Legion sweeps House Springs
The Cape Girardeau Ford & Sons American Legion senior baseball team swept a non-district doubleheader at House Springs on Saturday, winning 6-5 and 9-5.
Cape (13-4) had six hits in the opener, led by Brad LaBruyere with two. LaBruyere and David Sanders each drove in two runs.
Steven Houseman pitched six innings for the win, allowing just one earned run. Adam Smithey hurled the seventh for a save.
Ford & Sons banged out 16 hits in the nightcap, led by Collin Crane with three, including two home runs. He delivered four RBIs.
Smithey and Garrett Stevens both had three hits, while Alex Shell and Zach Plott added two apiece.
Kory Kitchen pitched six innings for the victory. Nick Allen worked the seventh for a save.
Cape hosts district rival Scott County at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
Jackson Legion falls at tournament
The Jackson American Legion senior baseball team finished a winless Mountain Home (Ark.) Tournament on Saturday with a 17-9 loss to Springfield (Mo.) Kickapoo.
Nick D'Amico had four hits for Jackson (7-12). Ryan Cheney had two hits, including a home run, and four RBIs. Alex Tripp added two hits.
Earlier in the tournament, Jackson lost to a pair of Arkansas teams, Conway 9-2 and Searcy 10-1.
Jackson Senior Babe Ruth earns split
The Jackson Senior Babe Ruth baseball team lost its first game against Dexter but won the second Friday.
Adam Urhan struck out nine but took the loss in the first game, a 5-1 defeat.
Chris Hanback, Bryce Faulkner and Jake Conklin each collected two hits in Jackson's 7-6 victory in the second game.
Cory Simmons drove in two runs for Jackson (3-1) in its win.
Davis and Tewis team for first place
Robin Davis and Linda Tewis combined to shoot a 61 to finish in first place at the two-lady best ball net Ladies Day at Dalhousie Golf Club on Thursday.
Eileen Owens and Betty Dewitt shot a 65 to finish second.
Hugh and Linda Tewis finished tied for first place with Leon and Mary Jane Eftink at the Friday night couples golf outing Friday at Dalhousie.
Giebler, Landre win four-ball tourney
Brevin Giebler and George Landre combined to shoot a 62 in a two-man four-ball handicap net tournament Saturday at Dalhousie Golf Club.
John Morlan and Ron Gosche tied for second (63) while Ken Swinford and Betty DeWitt were third (64).
Brevin Giebler, Lyle Davis and Ken Schmitz took first in the nine-hole men's scramble with a 29.
Connells, Simmons, Burdess win playoff
Jeff Connell, Jay Connell, Mark Simmons and Joe Burdess took first place in the championship flight at the 15th annual four-person scramble at the Cape Jaycee Municipal Golf Course on Saturday. The team shot a 56 and won on the first playoff hole.
Gene Golden, Joe Golden, Mark Balance and Bill Isbell took second. Mark Sissom, Tony Sissom, Bubba Kobler and Dino Bankson were third with a 58.
In the A-flight, the team of Gary Lynch, Morris Montgomery, David Young and Jerry Erlbacher took first with a 62. Craig Wilson, Buck Unterreiner, Dave Moore and Denis Menz were second (62) while Bruce Turner, Rick Lewis, Brian Hubbard and Mike Ireland were third (62). The tie was broken with a scorecard playoff.
In the B-flight, the team of Tom King, Diana King, Korey King and Josh Lagrand was first, followed by Clara Schafer, Bill Schafer, Carolyn Blechle and Mike Blechle then Martin Santana, Ray Doyle, Chuck Meyer and Joe Moore. All three teams shot a 65 and the ties were broken with a scorecard playoff.
In the C-flight, there was another three-way tie with all three teams shooting 68 and the ties broken by a scorecard playoff. The team of Deon Stephens, Brad Honey, Nat Choate and Josh Choate was first. The team of Brandon Holzum, Kirk Boeller, Nathan Kolda and Kyle Schade was second. The team of Joe Singleton, Amber Brown, Nat Tripp and Robin Tripp was third.
