SALT helps honor fallen officers

To the editor:Seniors and Lawmen Together was established about 12 years ago. In its humble beginnings, SALT served as an advisory board regarding senior-citizen issues to local law enforcement to include the Cape Girardeau County Sheriff's Department, the Cape Girardeau Police Department and the Jackson Police Department. SALT still serves in its advisory capacity but has evolved into much more. SALT hosts a number of events throughout the year including a senior Christmas lights tour and a senior information day typically held during the summer months.

On May 11 SALT hosted its 10th annual law enforcement memorial event. Eighteen officers from the Southeast Missouri area who have fallen in the line of duty were honored in this event. What began as about a dozen SALT members and local law enforcement officers gathering at the law enforcement memorial monument in North County Park has grown to an event in which nearly 200 family members of fallen officers, Southeast Missouri law enforcement officers and SALT members gather to honor these fallen soldiers.

As SALT's chair and on behalf of Sheriff John Jordan, chief Carl Kinnison and chief James Humphries, thanks, SALT members, for all you do, especially with the law enforcement memorial event which serves to remind us all that those who have fallen while serving others are true heroes and are not to be forgotten.

Capt. ROGER W. FIELDS, Operations Bureau, Cape Girardeau Police Department
