Redhawks win season finale
Monday, May 7, 2007
The battle for the team's home run lead came down to the final game of the season, and junior Michelle Summers barely won the title.
Summers hit a home run and drove in a pair to lead the Southeast Missouri State softball team to a 4-1 victory over Morehead State in the Redhawks' season finale.
Summers finished the season with 14 homers, two more than freshman Stacia Dopudja. Summers went 3-for-3 with a double, the homer and a stolen base. She finished the season with a .333 batting average, tops on the team. Dopudja was second with a .327 average.
Amber Peterson and Lauren Bradley both hit solo homers in the win. Bradley went 2-for-2 in the game.
Central graduate Megan McDonald went 2-for-4.
Junior Elaine Fisher allowed one run, a home run in the sixth, in the complete-game effort. She finished the season 14-19 with a 3.69 ERA.
The Redhawks conclude the season 20-29 overall and 11-16 in the Ohio Valley Conference. This is the first time the Redhawks have failed to qualify for the OVC tournament. The team only had two seniors -- Lindsay Pickering and Stephanie Mata -- on the roster. Mata batted .244 this season while Pickering finished at .308.
