Letter to the Editor

Say thanks to Missouri's farmers

To the editor:Wednesday was National Agriculture Day, and I want to share the miracle of Missouri agriculture, which feeds us, fuels our vehicles and fertilizes our soil so we can continue to grow more. This day, celebrated the first day of spring each year, is the perfect time to learn more about Missouri's No. 1 industry.

Through the leadership of Gov. Matt Blunt and initiatives led by his mission to support Missouri's farm families, the Missouri Department of Agriculture is home to six divisions that work to protect and promote Missouri's agricultural industry: Agriculture Business Development, Animal Health, Grain Inspection and Warehousing, Plant Industries, Weights and Measures and the Missouri State Fair.

Missouri is home to more than 105,000 farms across the state and is a national leader in the production of many great agricultural products. Annually, Missouri producers farm over 30 million acres and produce nearly $6 billion worth of crops, livestock, poultry and aquaculture.

When you consider how blessed we are to have so many willing hands convert sunlight and rain into growing plants which help provide our nourishment, a simple thank you to Missouri farmers is not enough.

Through well-thought-out initiatives, agriculture will continue to feed us, fuel our vehicles and fertilize our soils so we can continue to grow and prosper. The next time you sit down to enjoy a meal, turn the key in your car or fertilize your flowers, remember that Missouri farmers have risen to the challenge.

Please join me in thanking them.

MATT BOATRIGHT, Interim Director, Missouri Department of Agriculture, Jefferson City, Mo.
