JANUARY 6 Contra Dance: Want to learn how to dance the old-school way? The Cape Girardeau Friends of Traditional Music and Dance will host its Contra Dance at Christ Episcopal Church from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. The dance is taught and called to live music, and no experience is necessary. The event is open to the public.

JANUARY 17 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dinner: Southeast Missouri State University hosts its annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dinner starting at 6 p.m. with a keynote address from Myrlie Evers-Williams, wife of slain civil rights leader Medgar Evers, at the Show Me Center. JANUARY 20 Singles Dance: Parents without Partners hosts its monthly Singles Dance at the Cape Girardeau VFW Hall from 8 p.m. to midnight.

JANUARY 20 Trivia Night: The Arts Council of Southeast Missouri will host a trivia night beginning at 6 p.m. at the Cape Senior Center, 921 N. Clark St. Teams of eight will compete to be crowned Southeast Missouri's smartest. For more information call 334-9233.

JANUARY 27 Winter Garage Sale: Miss those steamy summertime garage sales? Here's one to satisfy your craving: a winter garage sale at the Osage Community Centre from 8 a.m. to noon. Call 334-2859 for more information.

JANUARY 27 and 28 Paper Mosaic Workshop: The Arts Council of Southeast Missouri will host a paper mosaic workshop with internationally known artist Russell Irwin. JANUARY 27 Wild Game Cooking: Learn how to cook what you're hunting. The Missouri Department of Conservation will offer this class for adults only at its Conservation Campus Nature Center at 10:30 a.m. Registration is required by calling (573) 290-5218.

FEBRUARY 1 Paxton Williams: Historian and George Washington Carver impersonator Paxton Williams will speak from 7 to 8 p.m. at Academic Hall Auditorium.

FEBRUARY 3 Penguin Party: The Cape Girardeau Public School Foundation will host a Penguin Party at the Cape Country Club from 6 to 11 p.m. as part of its annual drive. The night begins with drinks and jazz, followed by a dinner, live auction and dance. Tickets are available by calling Tammy Samuel at 651-0555.

JANUARY 4 Redhawks Basketball: The Southeast Missouri State University men and women take on Eastern Illinois beginning at 5 p.m. at the Show Me Center.

JANUARY 12-14 Saint Francis Indoor Invitational: The Show Me Center will host the 13th edition of Saint Francis' annual soccer tournament for boys and girls ages 8 to 18. For more information call 651-2297.

JANUARY 18 Redhawks basketball: The Southeast Missouri State University men and women take on Tennessee State starting at 5 p.m. at the Show Me Center.

JANUARY 20 Redhawks basketball: The Southeast Missouri State University men and women take on Tennessee Tech starting at 5 p.m. at the Show Me Center.

JANUARY 27 Redhawks basketball and gymnastics: The Southeast Missouri State University gymnastics squad faces off against Kent State at 1 p.m. at the Show Me Center. The basketball teams take the court against Murray State University starting at 5 p.m.

JANUARY 29: Redhawks basketball: The Southeast Missouri State University men and women take on Austin Peay starting at 5 p.m. at the Show Me Center.


RECREATION

EVERY SUNDAY Polar Bear Rides: Rides start at Dempster Hall every Sunday at 1:30 p.m. through January and February. For more information visit www.cyclecape.org.


ARTS

Through Jan. 21 The Southeast Missouri State University Department of Art will host its annual Faculty Exhibition at the Southeast Missouri Regional Museum on the university campus. The exhibition includes work from 12 university art faculty members in a variety of styles and media. For more information call 651-2260.

Jan. 5 The Arts Council of Southeast Missouri will host an exhibition by local artist Lou Varro and nationally known artist Russell Irwin in its galleries at 32 N. Main St. Varro's work consists of paintings, while Irwin's work consists of both paintings and paper mosaics. For more information call 334-9233.

Jan. 5 Gallery 1.2.5, 125 N. Main St., will host a First Friday opening reception with art by Cape Central High School art teacher Robert Friedrich from 5 to 9 p.m. For more information call 335-2699.
