Be informed, support stem-cell plan

To the editor:

I was appalled by the half-page advertisement against Amendment 2 on Sept. 28. This kind of propaganda is as bizarre as the comments made by Alan Keyes during his recent visit to Missouri. The purpose of the stem-cell initiative is to allow any medical cures or treatment found from early stem-cell research to be used for our Missouri citizens. This is not for the sake of cloning.

The researchers are not mad scientists hoping to clone humans. They are physicians and medical personnel hoping to relieve the endless suffering seen on a daily basis.

For those of you so strongly opposed to this, spend time in a hospital or nursing home. Imagine your spouse or mother or father not recognizing you or not able to perform the simplest acts of daily living due to Alzheimer's disease. Spend time with someone paralyzed, or suffering from a head injury or neuromuscular disease, and watch the struggle they and their families make. Observe gaping wounds on stumps of a diabetic that will not heal. Watch a child suffer from diabetes, cancer and numerous diseases that may be helped by new research.

Please become informed on this issue. There is a wonderful Web site, www.missouricures.com, that will answer your questions and is filled with facts. Or write Missouri Coalition for Lifesaving Cures, P.O. Box 221300, Kirkwood, Mo. 63122 for information. Be an informed voter, and please vote yes for life.
