9-11

The date under the page number in the upper right-hand corner of this Opinion page -- Sept. 11 -- is one that evokes any number of emotional responses. And with today's fifth anniversary of the deadly terrorist attacks, feelings are running even deeper.

In several stories produced by the Southeast Missourian's staff and in essays by members of our community reflecting on the events of Sept. 11, 2001, we have tried to present a snapshot of where we are and who we are in the shadow of 9-11.

For many of us, the last five years have provided a journey into attempts to understand the darkest side of humanity. Some of us have found ways to embrace hard-to-grasp concepts that mix politics, chest-thumping, national posturing and religion. Some of us have not.

Let us hope that most of us have looked into the face of terror and have resolved that freedom and liberty are worth whatever personal contribution we are called upon to make.
