Tax issue affects government distrust

To the editor:

Sunday's editorial about our half-cent sales-tax increase, just passed in August, and the road-bridge property tax cause me to have a flashback.

The people were lied to about the River Campus sales tax. It was only supposed to go into effect if the tax and the bond issue both passed. Our elected officials decided to renege and put the tax on anyway. Now the county commissioners are deciding that both taxes -- the half-cent sales tax and the road-bridge property tax -- will be collected for 2007.

Evidence shows local officials can't be trusted any more than federal politicians. Still, media and politicians wonder why more people don't vote.
