St. Vincent wins volleyball title in repeat effort

St. Vincent topped Notre Dame 25-10, 25-21 for its second straight championship in Notre Dame's Volleyballfest.
The Squaws, a Class 2 district champion last year, improved to 7-0 through Saturday.
"We played awfully well," St. Vincent coach Mary Rosenquist said. "I'm real happy with how we did, and I'm looking forward to the rest of the season."
Notre Dame (3-4) was led in the final by Ashley Nenninger, who had 11 kills, and Meridith Medlin, who had four kills and 14 assists.
Notre Dame had beaten Bell City 25-21, 27-25 in a semifinal match. The Cubs were runners-up last year and finished third in the Class 1 state tournament.
Nenninger had 12 kills for the Bulldogs in the semifinal, while Medlin had 11 kills and 12 assists, and Emily Huber had 10 assists. Emily Blattel had four aces, and Haley Bohnert led the team in digs with eight.
Notre Dame had earlier beaten Central 25-20, 26-24 and Caruthersville 25-15, 25-19 in pool play.
Central settled for fifth place.
JV -- St. Vincent defeated Bell City for the title.
GIRLS TENNIS Burroughs 5, Central 4
Central lost a tight match against a St. Louis County private, small-school power and finished sixth in the Great Eight tournament in Columbia, Mo.
Sarah Ford and Kristen Ford had singles wins for the Tigers, who then won two of the three doubles matches. Sarah Ford-Lindsey Pingel and Kristen Ford-Christen Edmonds had doubles wins for Central.
"It's hard to come back in doubles if you win only two singles matches," Central coach Annette Slattery said. "A few of the matches were pretty close. I was pleased, and hopefully this will be a good experience for us for the rest of the year."

BOYS SOCCER Central 4, Sikeston 0
Central picked up its first victory of the season with a victory against Sikeston in the seventh-place game at Notre Dame's Soccerfest.
The Tigers scored 30 seconds into the match when Tommy McGowan was assisted by Nick Allen.
Brad LaBruyere also scored in the first half.
Lucian Johnson and Ben Patrick had unassisted goals in the second half.
Clayton Uptain played the first 60 minutes of the shutout and Allen closed it out for the Tigers (1-2).
