Unbeaten Jackson, Notre Dame will meet for title in Soccerfest

Jackson and Notre Dame will play for the championship today in the Notre Dame Soccerfest after semifinal victories on Friday.

While Notre Dame (3-0) cruised to a 7-0 victory over Poplar Bluff, Jackson (2-0) slipped past Marion 2-1 in overtime.

Cape, which fell into the losers bracket after an opening round loss to Marion, suffered a 5-0 loss to St. Pius , which scored all five of the game's goals in a 6-minute span of the second half.

Notre Dame, which has scored a total of 13 goals in its first two games, was led by Jack Wedemeier, who scored two goals and added an assist.

Abe Dirnberger, Austin Gelsheimer, Matt Rosenquist, Zach Capriola and Mark Himmelberg each added a goal. Ryan Willen, John Unterreiner, and Dirnberger recorded assists.

For Jackson, Chris Shelton scored the game winner on a penalty kick 6 minutes into overtime. Shelton also assisted Jackson's first goal, which was scored by Matt Mueller 13 minutes into the second-half. Marion had tied the score on a penalty kick 26 minutes into the second half.

Jackson and Notre Dame will meet in the finals today at 7 p.m.

VOLLEYBALL Woodland Tournament

Leopold claimed the title of the Woodland Tournament by dropping the host team 25-15, 25-14.

Meadow Heights defeated Zalma 25-22, 25-12 for third-place, and Oak Ridge beat Oran 25-18, 25-12 in the consolation match.

N. Dame Volleyballfest

St. Vincent picked up a pair of wins in pool play, beating Notre Dame 26-24, 25-19, and dropping Caruthersville 25-13, 25-12.

In other action, Perryville swept Charleston 25-5, 25-11 and split with Marshfield 25-14, 22-25. Cape Central split a match with Caruthersville 23-25, 25-22, while Bell City moved past Charleston with a pair of 25-7 wins.

Pool play continues this morning. The championship will be played today at 6 p.m.

TENNIS Great Eight Tournament

Central split of pair of matches on the opening day of the Great Eight Tournament in Columbia Mo.

Pembroke Hill defeated the Tigers 6-3, but Central also posted an 8-0 victory over Columbia Hickman.
