Proud to have you home, Private Lynch

There is no question about it: Jessica Lynch is a hero.

Yes, we've all read about the so-called controversy about Lynch's rescue after she was held prisoner for a week in Iraq. Initial reports said she had been shot and stabbed and had emptied her weapon at her Iraqi attackers before she was captured.

Later, it turned out that Lynch -- a member of the 507th Maintenance Company -- was injured after her convoy was ambushed in southern Iraq and her Humvee crashed. It also turned out that her gun apparently jammed.

Eleven American soldiers died in the attack, and six others, including Lynch, were taken prisoner. One week later, American commandos rescued her from a hospital.

Today, Lynch is home, still recuperating from multiple broken bones and other injuries. She is mourning the loss of some fellow soldiers who aren't as lucky as she is.

Regardless of specifics, the young woman saw combat, was held prisoner for a week by hostile forces and lived to tell about it. After she returned home, we saw her smiling through her pain.

Not a hero? How is that even a question?
