Cairo, Ill., needs our help, support

To the editor:

It saddens me to see the topic "Cairo woes" and the number of articles written in the last six months about the place where I grew up. While it is indeed your responsibility to report the news, one would think that this city has been condemned and there are no newsworthy stories talking about the good that may be going on there. The political turmoil that you highlight really sickens me, both from the council and the mayor. I don't know what the solution may be, but it has to start with each person there and with support from those of us who have moved on. This Labor Day weekend, Cairo will play host to the class reunions of 1980,1981 and 1982. After reading your articles, I hope we can do something more than just catch up on old times, see how our kids have grown up and eat some good food. I hope we have some meaningful dialogue on what we can do to help revive a city on life support.
